WBBL Cup Preview

Gloucester City Queens start their inaugural season in Cardiff for the WBBL Cup this weekend. Playing Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, the winner of the group will head straight to the semi-finals of the competition. Here is a small preview of what your Queens have ahead of them:

Saturday 25th September 2021 CARDIFF MET ARCHERS:

Queens start their campaign against hosts Cardiff Met Archers. Coach Stef Collins brings her vast playing experience and international pedigree to an up and coming roster. Hopeful of a strong campaign this season after finishing in the bottom half of the league last season. With some key pieces back this will be a very difficult opening fixture for the Queens.

Sunday 26th September 2021 LEICESTER RIDERS:

The Riders are the defending champions of the WBBL Cup. Despite rebuilding from last seasons squad including the addition of new American Head Coach, Derrick Washington, this is a franchise with expectations of winning. It would be right to assume that they would start as favourites to progress from the group.

Wednesday 29th September 2021 OAKLANDS WOLVES:

The Queens will finish their group stage games down in St Albans taking on the Wolves. Oakland Wolves recently announced Lauren Milligan as their player/coach for this season. Known for developing some of the top young talent in the league they will be looking to make an impression on this competition.

Gloucester City Queens Head Coach, Jay Marriott had this to say about the competition:

"As a group we are excited about this competition. I would say all of these teams will have their eyes set on progressing from the group. For us this is great preparation for the season and we just take each game as it comes. I've told our group to play relaxed, enjoy it and be ready to learn from valuable experiences. We have a small rotation and dealing with some injury concerns so between games it's going to be about rest, recovery and staying healthy for the start of league on the 2nd October. I love the talent we have in our group, if we play our style of basketball we are capable of beating anyone."
