The Grainger Cup | CEO a former victim of knife crime!

With the Grainger Cup just 7 days away our CEO, Jay Marriott, who as a former professional will be playing in the event, opened up about being a victim of knife crime as a teenager, nearly derailing his basketball career before it got started.

CEO, Jay Marriott had this to say:

"This event is in honour of Joe Grainger, someone who cared about providing a safe environment for young players to get off the streets and focus on sport. I was given the same opportunities by someone just as passionate as Joe but I went out one night and that's all it took to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was told that the knife wound was a half an inch from hitting major organs and could have been the end of my sporting career. What made this situation worse was I was just a few months from accepting my dream of a scholarship in the USA. Thankfully it all worked out and led to a 10 year playing career, roles in coaching and now in the front office of basketball but it's not lost on me how incredibly fortunate I am to be where I am today. I know people view these types of incidents happening to certain types of individuals but I hope to educate our young players that it just takes a moment of thoughtlessness and it can change your trajectory"

The event will also be raising money for the Hollie Gazzard Trust who align with Gloucester City Basketball as they seek to positively change the lives of young people through partnerships in communities, as well as working alongside other charities and professional agencies.

CEO, Jay Marriott continued to say:

"We recognise we are just a piece of the puzzle when it comes to the work we do in the community, we are delighted to support Nick and the Hollie Gazzard Trust. This is an event to celebrate collaboration and shout about some great relationships we have had over the 18 months. I want to especially thank University of Gloucestershire, St Peter's High School, GBBA, Stroud Sharks, The Crypt School, Montague Academy, Gloucester Blazers Wheelchair Basketball, Loujie and the Phillipino Basketball Community, Mo at Rising Stars, FF6, Jake and Little Monsters, Julie Kent and Pied Piper, Colin at TMS, Ben and Lisa at Titan Performance, Dawn and Leanne with the Venture Community Hub, Goals Beyond Grass and Aspire to name just a few who have successfully collaborated with us. The event tagline is ONE CITY and I know if we continue to be open to working together we can make a hugely positive impact in the community."
